REPEAT MEDICATION
Skin and ear cases
A three month health assesment for skin and ear disease patients is essential for the following reasons:
- Pets with skin disease must be examined to check the effectiveness of the medication prescribed.
- We often find pets with skin disease have undiagnosed ear and skin infections which are often not easy for owners to identify and may not be affecting your pet's behaviour.
- If the medication is partially effective or ineffective, we can look at other options to control the problem.
- Many medications have potential side effects which are important to check for regularly and, in some situations, prevent them.
- Some medications can make unrelated diseases worse, especially if it is a new problem, so a regular health assessment can highlight problems earlier.
- Skin and ear disease often involves bacteria and yeast infections which can become resistant to the medication prescribed. It is vital this is identified early in the course of a problem to avoid promoting resistant infections which can be difficult to treat.
- Regular assessment for parasites that can make skin and ear problems worse is essential.
- Manufacturers of many of the medications prescribed recommend regular repeat health assessments.
- Remember your pet cannot always communicate when something is wrong - a three month check is the opportunity for us to detect any changes or problems.
